Rumor: Thailand and Vietnam could be hurt worst as big notebook PC brands turn back to China for mass production, media report, saying Southeast Asia turned out to be too costly for laptop production and US tariffs have not had as big an impact as feared.

Taiwanese suppliers relocated production lines to Southeast Asia amid tariffs and client requests to move production outside of the Red Supply Chain (Communist nations (China)).

But assembling a laptop in Southeast Asia costs US$9 more per unit than in China, which seems small but is most of the assembly cost.

$Super Micro Computer(SMCI.US) Dell and Super Micro sell into the very same boom, yet their paths have split in a way that is difficult to ignore. Both build the servers that power AI and both have order books full of AI demand. Two companies, riding the same wave, with wildly different results. The gap is not really about growth, since both have plenty of it. It is about how each company is paying for that growth. Dell funds its expansion from its own cash flow, shipping billions in AI servers while still throwing off enough cash to reward shareholders. Super Micro has had to reach for outside money. To fill a wave of new orders, it recently raised around $7 billion through equity and equity-linked financing. The move worried investors about dilution and knocked its stock down sharply. Super Micro also carries other baggage that Dell does not. It has faced governance concerns and an export-control review. These issues explain why its shares stay cheap even as revenue climbs. $Super Micro Computer(SMCI.US)

Woah.

SMCI guided for 8.4-8.7% gross margins last quarter. They have a TTM gross margin of 8.83%.

They just came out after hours and said they are increasing their guide for gross margins to now 15-17%.

Even during 2024-2025, their gross margins went from 11-13%.

How does a commodity server rack provider double their margins in the past 90 days?

If anything, it feels like the company is either rolling out new products with better margins in the AI space or gaining more leverage with their customers to command better margins. If a low margin business like $Super Micro Computer(SMCI.US) can gain leverage, then other AI names can as well, which is part of the reason that competitors like $Dell Tech(DELL.US) and $Hewlett Packard Enterprise(HPE.US) are up after hours.

Pretty incredible move from SMCI and could be a big moment for many AI names that are able to increase margins.

If you missed $Dell Tech(DELL.US) in 200's, $Micron Tech(MU.US) in 400's, then I think $Meta Platforms(META.US) is at those levels right now. $Microsoft(MSFT.US) as well but since its more saturated and has OpenAI liabiltiies, I will go with Meta as the best Growth + Fundamentals idea. All we need is a weekly close above last week. We have a party on!

Chip and memory stocks recovered last night with AMD & WD leading the way. Trump's call to go and buy a Dell computer worked magic once more as the stock soared 7%. Overall stock market edged higher but the last 2 times it reached this resistance, a pullback ensued. Let's see whether this rise can hold this time round.
