With the major banks share prices sliding, it’s a good time for long term investors to buy lots and dollar cost average

It seems that most focus on the bank selloff instead of registering a broad SG market weakness today. Almost all discussions focused on the impact of the Citi analyst downgrade but is this the cause or just the trigger for the sell down? The toppishness/high valuation of the banks have been shared for quite some time but those voices were rediculed by the bank bulls who shares their unwaivering conviction that banks will only go up. Sometimes, Mr Market is just waiting for an excuse at an opportune time to take profits and pass the bag. Such is a time for the baptism of fire for new investors. Good luck and may they emerge stronger after this.

If OCBC or DBS ever drops to single digits per share. I think the potential of rebound and upside will be huge as that most likely after a devastating crisis crash like 2008/09 time period. Why two banks because of their strong income streams (how they earned money) and purely DCA slowly into these and sleep easy every night and also the resilience dividend play. Citigroup downgraded OCBC to Sell with a $27.50 target price, expecting flat Q3 earnings; the stock fell 5.9% on Wednesday. The Straits Times Index (STI) dropped ~2.5% to around 5,466 this morning, with OCBC falling another 4.4%, UOB 4.8%, and DBS 3.2%.

A sharp decline in the three major bank stocks is not inevitable; I view this as a normal correction and see no need for panic. If capital can withstand it, now is an excellent time to adjust positions.

Following Wednesday's initial hit, the 3 local banks $DBS(D05.SG)$OCBC Bank(O39.SG)and $UOB(U11.SG)extended their declines on Thursday, dragging the Straits Times Index (STI) down by more than 2.5%.

There is also a fresh macro warning from JP Morgan that surging global long bond yields that were driven by renewed inflation and debt fears in Wall Street, will negatively impact Q3 2026 earnings for South East Asian lenders. This has prompted major institutional desks to trim their banking exposure.

What Should Investors Do Right Now?

Dividend & Income Investors: Do Not Panic. Stagger your buys.

If your objective is long term passive income, this selloff is a gift. The underlying fundamental health , fortress balance sheets and regional wealth management engines of the local trio have not changed.

For momentum and swing traders, trading volume is exceptionally heavy on the sell side, creating a clear technical breakdown.

Stay on the sidelines until the bleeding stops. Wait for the banking stocks to form a clear technical base before attempting any mean reversion trades. Q3 earnings season will serve as the ultimate litmus test.

Previously, bank stocks required 100 shares per lot, now reduced to 10 shares per lot. This seemingly simple yet abnormal move must have some hidden motives. Before, with 100 shares per lot, you could only bet if you had money; otherwise, you could only watch. Now, it's so easy to place a bet with just 10 shares per lot???

Rates at 5.35% on US 10Y is the real killer, OCBC -10% on Citi sell call is just excuse with DBS and UOB sliding with it. But this is rates-driven de-risk, not SG bank specific - NIM actually expands at 5.35% and asset quality still solid. Buy fear when yields top.

Speaking on hindsight (oops) but banks have run out quite a lot in terms of valuations and dividend yields. A good chance for long term investors to get some exposure if prices correct further.
