1️⃣ The stock experienced normal market fluctuations rather than a decisive breakout after my recent purchase. It never gave a strong reason to celebrate nor a compelling reason to exit. IT remained a long term technology and AI growth holding, allowing me to observe how MSFT’s business momentum, cloud leadership, and AI investments continued to develop. I was an active Microsoft user since few decades ago till now. Every step of the way I know.

2️⃣ I chose patience. I did not sell because my original investment thesis had not materially changed. Holding steady allowed me to avoid emotional decisions and preserve flexibility for future opportunities.

3️⃣ In about two months, I will likely focus on whether Microsoft’s AI monetization, cloud growth, and market sentiment continue strengthening. If confidence improves, I may consider increasing exposure. I conditions remain mixed, I may simply continue holding, letting the business performance — not short term price movements guide my next decision.⛳️

$Microsoft(MSFT.US)is spending an enormous amount on AI data centres and infrastructure. Its FY2026 capital expenditure and finance leases reached roughly US$175 billion, with around US$116 billion of that being property and equipment spending. The concern of most investor is how quickly will all this AI spending generate enough additional profit and free cash flow?

This became particularly visible on 17 August, when MSFT fell about 3.0% to US$480.35, wiping around US$112 billion from its market value. Investors were reassessing the returns on Microsoft's massive AI infrastructure investments.

Investors are increasingly concerned about the amount of capital being poured into AI infrastructure. The market is beginning to question whether AI revenue will grow quickly enough to justify the industry's enormous capex commitments.

So when sentiment toward AI stocks weakens, Microsoft can be affected even when its own quarterly results remain strong.

On 30 July, Microsoft shares jumped more than 15% in one day after its earnings and Azure outlook, adding almost US$450 billion to its market value—the largest one-day market-cap gain ever recorded by a company.

After such a dramatic rally, investors naturally become more sensitive to any concerns about valuation, margins or AI spending.

In short, market isn't asking "Is Microsoft growing?" anymore. It's asking "Is Microsoft making enough money from AI to justify how much it is spending on AI?"That is the key reason MSFT has been volatile in August 2026.

Context: MSFT has gained about 29% since February, recovering strongly from around US$352 and recently reaching above US$500. The move reflects renewed confidence in its AI and cloud businesses.

My trade: I bought during the earlier weakness and have held through the recovery. I’m not looking to chase the recent surge but I’m also not rushing to take profits.

Takeaway: MSFT is another one of my wide-moat holdings so I’m comfortable holding it longer term. The big question is whether its huge AI capex spending will generate enough revenue and cash flow to justify the investment. Azure is growing strongly but the payoff needs to keep catching up with the spending.

With huge enterprise moat, microsoft will continue to have solid steady cash inflow for the foreseeable future. Bought and held through the negative sentiment and was rewarded with the latest earnings. Will continue to hold 💪

$Apple(AAPL.US) While other 'Magnificent Seven' companies spend big on AI, Apple's more conservative strategy has turned the stock into a valuable portfolio hedge against volatility. Apple's "business is built on a consumer hardware and services ecosystem rather than cloud infrastructure or ad-supported platforms." Analysts have speculated for months that Apple could be one of the most resilient Big Tech names. While Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet pour hundreds of billions of dollars into capital expenditures for AI initiatives, Apple hasn't participated in the same level of spending. Earlier attempts to roll out Apple Intelligence back in 2024 largely failed, leading many to see the company as an AI laggard. But Apple's "go-slow" strategy comes in handy on days when investor concerns about AI overspending flare up, insulating the stock from downturns that hit the semiconductor space. By focusing on its hardware products instead of chasing emerging AI technologies, Apple has grown its installed base to over 2.5 billion active devices. As a result, the company now has an unrivaled distribution network to monetize on-device. This is the main reason why I'm holding on to my position in Apple. In the new AI era, Apple has managed to stay relatively competitive even when it does not engage in the AI war with the other Mag 7 companies. $Microsoft(MSFT.US)OpenAI’s widening losses have once again raised questions about the sustainability of the AI ecosystem. The interesting part is that cloud providers like Microsoft can capture part of the economics, but they still can’t completely escape the pressure from rising hardware costs and massive infrastructure spending.

This creates a strange dynamic: AI revenue is growing, but so are the costs required to support that growth. If hardware prices continue rising faster than monetization, the industry may struggle to expand margins even as demand remains strong.

The market is therefore starting to focus less on AI revenue growth itself and more on where the profits ultimately accumulate—and whether the entire ecosystem can generate sustainable free cash flow.

I started investing in US stocks in June, and Microsoft was actually the first US stock I purchased. I’m happy that I managed to sell it at a good price and earned around SGD 120 per share, even though I didn’t hold the shares for more than two months.

But my biggest takeaway from this experience is that investing is not always about making quick profits. If I want to become a true long-term investor, I need to learn how to be patient and give my investments enough time to grow. Sometimes, the market may go up and down, and short-term movements can easily affect our emotions.

This experience reminded me that good investments need time, patience and discipline. I’m still learning and building my investment journey step by step. Hopefully, I can become a more patient and disciplined investor in the future! 😊📊
