$Meta Platforms(META.US) just burned cash for the first time since its 2012 IPO year

Free cash flow came in at negative $2.12B in Q3, down from positive $10.63B a year ago

Capex hit a record $34.91B, more than the $32.79B Meta generated from operations

That's 54% of revenue going straight into servers and data centers

Meta narrowed its 2026 capex outlook to $135B to $145B, raising the low end from $130B, and gave no 2027 number yet

Shares fell nearly 7% after the report and the 5 year credit default swap spread on $Meta Platforms(META.US) hit an all time high

This isn't a cash crunch. Revenue is still growing 26% and Meta has $82.45B on hand. But one of the greatest cash machines ever is now spending every dollar it makes on AI, and the market wants proof it pays off

Rapid enterprise token adoption and mid-sized model deployment validate that real-world AI commercialization is still early, driving sustained compute demand. Meta’s advertising efficiency gains and SpaceX’s infrastructure scale showcase how high-conviction players convert heavy capex into high-margin monetization—underpinning long-term upside across the mega-cap tech ecosystem.

$Meta Platforms(META.US) just erased about $245 billion in market value from its post-earnings high

The stock jumped as high as $748.80 after hours Wednesday, up 7.4% on a revenue beat

It is now trading near $653, down 6.4% on the day, per Yahoo Finance data

What changed overnight was the fine print

Meta's 10-Q filed this morning shows about $825 billion in future leases and contracts, much of it tied to AI data centers and cloud capacity, up from nearly $700 billion disclosed in July per Bloomberg

That includes $454.52 billion in non-cancelable commitments, with $121.41 billion due in 2027 alone

Q3 revenue grew 26% to $64.60 billion, but free cash flow was negative $2.12 billion after $34.91 billion of capex

Meta also created a new non-voting Class C stock that it says can be used for future capital raises

The ad business is still growing fast. The market is now pricing what it costs to keep up in AI, and a quarter that looked like a beat at 4 PM turned into a balance sheet question by the morning

$Meta Platforms(META.US)

Context: META has been falling after its earnings report. This happened after the company shared its big plans for future spending in a regulatory filing. According to Bloomberg, Meta has agreed to spend a whopping $825 billion in the future. Investors are worried about reduced free cash flow after the tech giant revealed it has agreed to spend about $825 billion on future leases and contracts for AI computing power. This money will be spread out across several leases and contracts, with a lot of it going towards artificial intelligence computing power and infrastructure. That's a big jump from July, when Meta said it had future spending commitments of almost $700 billion. Meta holds $355.7 billion in operating and finance leases that do not yet sit on its balance sheet. These deals cover data centers and energy infrastructure leases set to start over the rest of this year through 2036.

My Trade: Tough decision to make as Meta retraces to $650 following earnings. It looks enticing to purchase but at the same time, Meta has announced the creation of nonvoting stock and 2 for 1 split to fund growth. I'm holding for now.

Meta Has Created Nonvoting Stock to Fund Growth

Takeaway: This new stock could give Meta more flexibility when it comes to making big purchases or paying off debts. The move is likely to have a significant impact on the company's finances and operations in the coming months. @Captain's Treasure

Today (October 22, 2026), the US stock market showed clear divergence and risk-off sentiment, with funds shifting from tech growth stocks to safe-haven assets and traditional cyclical sectors.

Concerns over tech capex trigger fund outflows

Overnight earnings from several tech giants missed expectations or offered cautious guidance:

Meta's increased capital expenditure turned free cash flow negative, sparking market concerns about the ROI on AI investments.

Statements from Lam Research and IBM on AI demand or capital costs fell short of expectations, putting pressure on the semiconductor and tech sectors (XLK) after the open.

Tesla was dragged down by a slight decline in automotive revenue, breaking below key moving averages.

Rise in safe-haven and defensive flows

Influenced by geopolitical risk rumors (Middle East situation) and high, volatile US Treasury yields, risk-off sentiment rose:

The energy sector (XLE) was boosted by rising crude oil prices (Brent broke through $112/barrel), becoming the main direction for fund inflows.

US Treasuries and gold attracted some safe-haven inflows, with the 10-year yield finding short-term bid support near 5.08%.

Long-term positioning is not considered yet as the opportunity hasn't arrived; those who bottom-fished have entered and are prepared for timely take-profit and stop-loss operations$Oracle(ORCL.US)NVIDIA

Tesla’s decision to reduce its capital expenditure target to approximately $20 billion, while Meta raises its minimum spending commitment to $135 billion, highlights diverging investment strategies. Tesla appears to be prioritising capital discipline and cash-flow management, whereas Meta continues to commit substantial resources to AI infrastructure and data-centre capacity. The contrasting cash-flow trends will be important in assessing each company’s ability to fund investment internally, maintain financial flexibility and generate future returns.

$Meta Platforms(META.US)

Context: Q3 beat expectations, and the core franchise remains solid. Ads stayed strong, with growth driven mainly by ad pricing (+14%), accelerating for the third straight quarter. Q4 total revenue guide of $73-76bn meets the more bullish buy-side bar of $74-75bn. While Meta’s revenues surged by 26%, its operating income was negatively affected, giving investors an ambiguous perspective on the firm’s financial health. Meta expects more revenue as AI investments keep growing. Meta has made changes to its estimated annual investment, which now stands at $135 billion to $145 billion compared to the previous figure of $130 billion to $145 billion. The analysts had predicted that the spending was around $138.27 billion. The concentration on this part is primarily towards the data centers and other devices used to train the system and AI assistants. Audience growth was slightly disappointing, as daily active users on Meta’s apps reached 3.64 billion, slightly underexpectations.

My Trade: I'm holding Meta for the long term and this current price movement/range doesn't significantly affect my decision. I'm waiting for a lower price, preferably lower than $700 to buy more to give myself more margin to work with.

Takeaway: September’s release of Muse, Meta’s personal AI assistant, helped the stock record its strongest performance in a while. The software can handle tasks such as sorting through emails, searching online and identifying deals on products. None of those abilities are particularly new, but Meta can introduce them to an audience numbering in the billions. @Captain's Treasure

$Meta Platforms(META.US) just posted NEGATIVE free cash flow for the first time since 2012, the year it went public

Q3 free cash flow came in at -$2.12 billion, down from +$10.63 billion a year ago

Capex hit a record $34.91 billion in one quarter, up 80% year over year, while cash from operations grew just 9% to $32.79 billion

The ad machine is still humming. Revenue rose 26% to $64.60 billion, beating estimates, and Q4 guidance of $73 to $76 billion came in above Wall Street

$Meta Platforms(META.US) also confirmed the new non-voting Class C stock tonight, saying the scale of AI investment required is "significant"

It narrowed 2026 capex to $135 to $145 billion and says it will keep investing aggressively in 2027

The most profitable ad business on earth now spends every dollar it makes and then some on data centers. Buybacks are gone, a new share class is coming, and the AI bet is no longer funded by spare cash

Meta announced plans for an effective 2-for-1 stock split in January 2027. Rather than simply doubling existing shares, Meta will issue one new publicly traded, non-voting Class C share for every existing Class A or Class B share. This means shareholders will receive an additional share without changing their voting power.

This also means Meta will likely do an equity raise, but if they can continue putting up numbers like this, the street will have to digest it.

AI companies have borrowed nearly half a trillion dollars in 2026, and the year isn't over

Borrowers tied to the AI buildout have priced close to $500 billion of new debt this year, per Bloomberg data and Goldman Sachs Research estimates

The hyperscalers alone have issued $194 billion so far in 2026, up from $108 billion in all of 2025, per Goldman

And they're only about 40% of the total. The rest is chipmakers, data center developers, utilities and project finance deals

$Oracle(ORCL.US), $Broadcom(AVGO.US) and $SpaceX(SPCX.US) are among the biggest borrowers, and there have been nine U.S. high-grade bond deals of $25 billion or more this year, the most ever per Bloomberg

Morgan Stanley expects AI-related debt issuance to reach nearly $570 billion for the full year

The AI boom started out funded by cash flow. It's increasingly funded by credit, and credit markets are less forgiving than stock buybacks. With $Meta Platforms(META.US) reporting tonight, how it plans to pay for its next round of capex matters as much as the capex number itself

Meta: Muse Could Be Its Next Growth Engine — But There’s a Catch

Meta’s 27% September rally has caught attention. The excitement is no longer just about advertising. Investors are increasingly looking at Muse, Meta’s push into agentic AI, and asking whether it could become another major revenue engine.

The opportunity is compelling. Muse could help users shop, plan trips and manage tasks, while Meta could eventually monetise through subscriptions, transactions and advertising. Its billions of users also give Meta a distribution advantage few AI competitors can match.

But there is a catch: downloads are not revenue.

Muse still needs to prove users will return, businesses will participate and consumers will spend. Competition from OpenAI, Google and others is intense. Privacy, cybersecurity and platform-access risks also remain. Amazon blocking Muse from its retail platform shows Meta may not control the ecosystem it wants to build.

The spending required is another concern. Meta’s 2026 capital expenditure guidance has reached US$130–145 billion. Advertising still dominates revenue, while rising AI investment is pressuring margins and free cash flow.

At around US$728, Meta trades at roughly 22x 2026 estimated earnings. That is not excessive for a company delivering strong growth, but September’s rally leaves less room for disappointment.

Technically, the trend remains bullish, with the stock above its major moving averages. However, momentum has cooled from its September peak.

For existing investors, Muse is an exciting catalyst, but expectations need discipline. Prospective investors should be careful about paying today for profits Muse has yet to deliver.

Muse could become Meta’s next growth engine. The question is whether the earnings arrive before the bill does.

High expectations for Meta following its initial success with Muse and overall higher hopes since last earnings. With the recent retrace of Meta's share price, beating expectations could send the stock soaring back up to $700+. On the other hand, SpaceX is too volatile and could swing either ways but I don't think it will come out top.
